Globecomm founder Hershberg launches tech firm
By: Claude Solnik March 11, 2015 LIBN
David Hershberg, founder and former CEO of Hauppauge-based Globecomm Systems, has launched STS Global, a telecommunications company based at Stony Brook University, along with a half-dozen former Globecomm staff.
Hershberg said his new firm, based in Stony Brook’s Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technologies building, has been accepted into the Start-Up NY initiative. He said the company, which is part of the school’s incubator program, will work closely with the university.
The firm in a press release said it will provide satellite and other telecommunication products and services to broadcasters, media, governments and private companies.
STS Global plans to design, integrate, manage and maintain telecommunications networks. Its services also include broadcasting live events, supporting new media broadcast centers, creating secure private networks for large corporations and using satellites to provide wireless connections and cybersecurity.
“It’s in telecommunications. It will be somewhat similar,” Hershberg said when asked how STS compares to his old firm, Globecomm. “But we have some new ideas.”
Hershberg left Globecomm, which had been a public company, a little more than a year ago after Wasserstein & Co. acquired the firm in a $340 million deal.
“The company was sold and new owners took over. They were going in a different direction,” he said. “As a result, they let me go and a number of other people.”
Hershberg said he is working with six former Globecomm employees and hopes to partner with Stony Brook University, developing products for cybersecurity and next-generation satellite and terrestrial.
In 1976, Hershberg founded Satellite Transmission Systems, which was sold to California Microwave, and then was acquired by L-3 Communications. He founded Globecomm in 1994, leading it until 2014.
